When the United States Olympic Committee named Boston as the official U.S bid city to potentially host the 2024 Olympic games on January 8, 2015, it seemed that Los Angeles' dream of hosting the Olympic Games for the third time in history was diminished. Boston beat out three other cities to be the official bid city; Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. This was not the first time L.A lost a bid to another U.S city. L.A sought to be the U.S candidate to host the 2016 Olympics but was beaten by Chicago, whose bid was ultimately rejected by the International Olympic Committee in favor of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
On July 27, 2015, Boston announced to the USOC that they were officially withdrawing from the Olympic bid due to the lack of local support from its citizens. This gave L.A's mayor, Eric Garcetti, a chance to revive Los Angeles' Olympic dream! After weeks of debates and meetings, on September 01, 2015 the L.A city council officially approved the decision to move forward with the 2024 Olympic bid proposal. That same day, the USOC named Los Angeles the official U.S bid city to host the 2024 Olympic Summer Games.
This is an inspiring American and Olympic story! It shows persistence and determination from a city that failed to win the USOC's original decision twice. We are excited for this opportunity to have the Olympics back in the U.S after 28 years! Let’s go LA2024!
The USOC will present Los Angeles to the International Olympic Committee as its bid choice later this month, and the IOC will choose the host of the 2024 Olympic Games on September 20, 2017.
