LeBron James, a 2x NBA champion, 4x NBA MVP, and 2x Olympic Gold Medalist. These are the accomplishments we think of when we hear his name. James has become one of the most influential athletes in the world, a GQ Men's style icon, and a successful business man. But out of all these accomplishments that are in the light of the media, James' true accomplishments lie within his hometown of Akron, Ohio. Born on December 30, 1984 in Akron, James was raised by a single mother who struggled to find steady work. At a young age, James' mother made the decision to allow James to move into a more stable family environment. The father of this family was a local youth basketball coach, who introduced him to basketball when he was 9 years old.
Now, with an extraordinary career in sports and business, James is giving back to his community in a very remarkable way. James will pay the college tuition of 1,100 children from his hometown of Akron, Ohio. All of the 1,110 students are participants of James' "I PROMISE" program. Ranging from third to seventh graders, the student enrolled in this program must complete the program, meet attendance, and grade requirements to receive the college tuition. James will start to cover tuition cost starting in 2021, when the students currently in seventh grade are expected to graduate high school. With the average tuition cost of $9,500 at the University of Akron, James is expected to cover the total cost of $42 million.
